"Wonder Woman", 2017
The holy texts of world religions including: Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam, describe a woman's menstrual cycle as "unclean" making her "spiritually impure". The menstruating woman is "dirty" and is forbidden to touch other people, to enter her place of worship, and even to perform prayer. These same texts present childbirth with great mysticism, emphasizing its miraculous nature, especially when it is of a "virgin mother".
Some say my blood is unclean
ceremonially, seven days impure
If we touch, you must bathe
If I bear children, you praise
Teach me master.
How does the holy fruit of my womb grow from a rotten seed?
All women wonder, some women bleed.
